During its brief Nintendo Direct this morning, Nintendo announced Virtual Console versions of Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow will have Pokemon Bank functionality.
Explaining transfers from Gameboy versions of Pokemon to newer versions simply aren't possible, the Pokemon Company International hopes the new functionality will make up for what proved to be a technical impossibility.
Pokemon caught in any of the versions on Virtual Console can be deposited into the Pokemon Bank in the same way as other Bank-compatible versions of the game.
This means you can finally bring the Mewtwo you caught in Red to the modern games, even if it isn't the Mewtwo childhood dreams were made of.
