As The Shannara Chronicles expands its story, it's moving its focus away from the main quest in order to develop other characters. But that shift short-changes the core group that it should feel more developed by now, causing this week's episode, "Pykon," to feel like a step back for the show.
Full spoilers for The Shannara Chronicles continues below.
There were several moments in "Pykon" that purely catered to the tropes expected of an MTV show, from Amberle's opening wet dream-lite kissing scene to Amberle and Eretria's lesbian-lite bath scene to Wil and Amberle's final real-life kiss at the end of the episode. Shows like The 100 have avoided falling into the need to cater specifically to the stereotypical demands of their network's viewers and excel because of it, and The Shannara Chronicles would be the better for not thinking it needs these "sexy" sequences to sell its content. That bath scene could have been some solid development for Amberle and Eretria, but instead was overshadowed by the sexual politics between the pair.
