Recently, I was made aware of a crowdfunding campaign for Rikki, a 23-year-old woman whose sudden development of aggressive encephalitis (an inflammation of the brain) has left her in desperate need of cognitive rehabilitation therapy. Distressed by the lack of support from the Australian healthcare system, Rikki's mother Lisa posted an article about it on a national website, and within days the campaign was almost halfway to its goal.
What was particularly moving about this campaign was not just the generosity of donations, but the messages left behind by people - a lot of whom are strangers to the family - with offers of support. "If you would like some moral support please contact me. We have survived 20 years of system neglect and have a life worth living," reads one. "You're not alone, and people care, Lisa. Keep fighting for your baby" reads another.
