Virtual Reality Expected to Generate $5.1 Billion in 2016

Virtual reality is expected to generate $5.1 billion in sales in 2016 with an install base of 38.9 million consumers, further cementing itself as a key technology in the video game industry.

That's according to SuperData Research, who predicts that Europe, with $1.9 billion in sales, will lead the charge in the VR space, which includes hardware, accessories, and software. North America will finish close behind with $1.5 billion, while Asia ($1.1 billion), and the rest of the world ($0.6 billion) round out the remaining of the $5.1 billion figure.

The 2016 total is up from just $660 million in 2015 and is expected to climb to $8.9 billion in 2017 and again to $12.3 billion in 2018.
